Compatible Technology International (CTI) board member Jorge Fernandez joined the executive director to determine the potential for water chlorinator systems to be installed in the Melchorita area. Results from meetings with the Ministry of Health officials and community water volunteers allowed the project to move forward. The purpose of the project is to reduce waterborne diseases by introducing a simple water chlorinator system costing $125 that could be installed for a water storage tank that would filter and chlorinate water for up to 1,000 community members. Each community learns to build, maintain systems and pay for chlorinator tablets.
In 2011, four chlorinators were installed in the first quarter in the Melchorita area (3 in Los Chiles, 1 in Cruz Verde). Review of maintenance and community responsibilities had to be reinforced in early 2012. A fifth system was installed in Laurel Galan mid 2012 with all five systems effectively running and being maintained.
